Tarte Shape Tape Concealer is a popular product in the makeup industry.
In my opinion, that is because it has great staying power. I can have all of my other makeup running off and this stuff is still there and it stays put. It also covers everything with little effort.
The packaging is very eye catching. We all know, that it is the product inside that matters, but still packaging means a lot. We all love pretty packaging.
The applicator is a large doe foot applicator, similar to the one the comes with some foundations. It does distribute a lot of product. The plunger doesn’t handle the amount of product on this applicator as well as I believe it should for a concealer application. This creates a couple of problems. It gets really messy at the top of the product (see the picture), which waste some of the product.
You also get a lot of product on the applicator for a concealer. The problem with that isn’t so much the amount on the applicator when you go to use it. You can always dot on a very small amount and you should just dot on a small amount. It can get cakey on mature skin really fast.
It does a really good job of covering my rosacea flare ups. If you have some brown age spots or melasma, I am sure it will do a great job of covering it up. It does have great coverage and it blends well on the skin. That is why it is also great for acne cover ups and it does stay on all day. However, with cover ups it is essential you get the right color for where you are placing the product.
It comes in 30 shades (so it isn’t hard to get a pretty close match) and has 4.5 stars with 10,108 people rating this product on Ulta (as of the time of this post).
Tarte Shape Tape Concealer is $27.00 for .33 oz at Ulta.
These are the colors (see above picture), that I currently have for covering up acne spots and roscea flare ups depending whether I have a tan or not. I have an olive skin tone. My daughter who uses this product, as well, has fair skin. So we interchange the colors or combine them depending on what is needed for skin tone at the time.
Tarte is a great brand and they have great ingredients in their line. I have no problem with the ingredients, coverage or blendablity. The issue I have is that it is so drying under the eyes. So even if it stays on all day, that doesn’t make up for the fact that it makes already crepey undereye skin appear more crepey and dry. That isn’t the look I am going for and I don’t think it is look anyone with mature undereye skin really wants to display to the world.
And don’t use powder under eyes. This product sets without powder and you don’t want to dry it out more. That really adds cake to the dry look.
Making it work for under eyes
I have tried and tried to make this product work on my mature under eyes with using just the smallest amount, mixed with some very emollient moisturizer. Some moisturizers do help and I have actually liked it with some moisturizers mixed in and it looked great. But taking the time to make sure that I only get a very small amount with the large applicator. Also having to add in just the right amount of moisturize to make it look great. It just takes too much time on a normal daily basis and you still aren’t assured that you have exactly the right mix to not make it look to dry.
I still like the product for the coverage and how beautiful it looks on the skin, but I will continue my search for a great concealer to coverage my darker, wrinkling under eyes, that is easy to apply for mature skin.
